Compared to the recent decades, there is an obvious difference in the way people think and act these days. In movies for example, erotic scenes were completely prohibited but at present, it is almost close to saying that a movie without a sexy scene is like a fried chicken without a gravy.
Communication media have played and continue to play a major role in the process of affecting and, to a greater extent, changing the behavior, attitudes and life-style of the people.
This notion leads to the issue that violence showed by mass media affect, contributes or is exactly the reason behind all the violence that is happening in our society.
But, media violence, however negative you may think of it, still has a positive effects to us.
We know that the never-ending adventures of super heroes always go along with fights and violence. This, according to a psychologist, teaches dependency to children. it also enable children to explore the inescapable feelings (fear, rage, greed, power-hunger) that they have been taught to deny and to reintegrate those feelings into a more whole, complex and more resilient self hood. why, in the first place, do parents tell their kids scary stories? its because, they know that their children can get lessons from it too.
In the movie business, the biggest-grossing films were the action movies (like Die Hard or Terminator), which means that people prefer this kind of movie than the comedy or drama. Others even prefer the R-rated films like Wrong Turn. This fact proves that more people are actually entertained or amused to this kind of movies. (or maybe because, it lets people experience radical things that they don't want to experience in real life but want to feel it through other people) Since producers do not take risk, they tend to produce action-filled or violent movies than the other types. In the end, admit it or not, it is still actually us who wants violence in the media.
However, There are many factors that affects our understanding what we hear on the radio, and what we see in TV and prints: personal experience, society, level of education, upbringing, family setting and peers. Psychiatrist Serge Tisseron even said, "Just because a film has a murder scene doesn't mean that people are going to commit the act; that overstates the power of the image and under-estimate the role of the parents"
In the end, it is still us who choose what media to consume and determine what the the meaning of the messages will be.
The mass media is like a mirror. It reflects the people and its society. It shows us the reality. It awakens our senses that these things are really happening and it needs action. So, if we want no violence in the media, let us change our attitude: let's not patronize violent movies, and let there be no violence in the society.
So, violence in mass media? Justifiable.

yeah. I agree because many viewers adapt those movies specially those children even the teenager and the adult..and even me, I admit that I adapt movies specially when the concept is scary. And after I watch the movie I can't sleep because I always remember those scariest part, so it gives me a thrill for which I know I can't face it in the real life.:-)but sometimes we adapt. like the self defense just like what we seen in the movie.
ReplyDeleteWe can't deny the fact that in these changing world we have to be aware of what is happening of the entire world.Mass media violence like what we see in the movies open our minds to a wide understanding of the negative side.Because of that,we learn to be prepared always and protect ourselves from any danger that may come our way.
ReplyDeleteThanks Ms. nalda for sharing your thoughts with us. I would like to raise two things here. One, violence is said to be innate to human even outside intervening factors such as environment and televsion. This goes to show that its a normal phenomenon only that media tend to glamorize by putting much emphasis on violence. No wonder this has become the subject of blame why children acquire aggressive behavior. Second, it has been said that violence is of central importance for the popular appeal of a tv program or film. The reason why we watched action films or those that depicts violence including sex is because it satisfies our psychological or emotional appeal. Furthermore, depiction of violence is more than just an entertainment coz its intrisically connected to social, emotional ideologies of human. ergo, its part of human existence.
ReplyDeleteI would like to share this statement i have made with my previous classes:
Sociologist has been pointed out media as having a fair share of shaping the minds of our people - either it may caused positive effects or brings us discomfort such as blaming it as great factor of committing violence especially to our youth. However, let me emphasise as well that media alone is not the sole culprit why violence is taking place in our society. Maybe what they see on televsion or movie only triggers them to do such gruesome activities. Put it bluntly, it only intensifies their drives to pursue their action. Prior to commit a violent act is a deeper reason that also needs to be considered such as personal problem or if a person has a history of psychological disturbances. What I'm trying to imply here is that THERE IS NO DIRECT EVIDENCE THAT MEDIA IS THE ROOT CAUSE OF VIOLENCE in the society.
Let me hear your sides!
We are now facing a new generation. its just a matter of acceptance that nowadays such violence is indeed happening in our society. With regards to those children who watched violent type of film, its not the concern of the film already that's why we have media regulatory board whose in-charge in classifying the films either its for children or adult. I think its the supervision of parents towards their children. That is why movies and TV shows have "PARENTAL GUIDANCE" for the parents to know that this type of movie or TV show needs such supervision.
ReplyDeleteNot because we saw it in TV or Movie we'll do the same thing thing. Media affects people but it doesn't dictates our life as a whole.
mass media is diverse and dynamic and it gone too far. expect things that are not good in the eyes of other people. as what stated, mass media is the mirror of the society therefore, crimes, killings and many violent things that rapidly happening in our society might be mirrored through mass media.
ReplyDeleteyes, there are movies and news reports that shows violence and may not good for some people especially children. we cant avoid this things because that's reality. mass media is not the one to blame here it is just a mere medium and the eye of people reflecting what happen in real world.
yes! media is just portraying the reality. It gives us ideas on the changes of our society as years goes by.And that violent scenes on television had become a normal thing to us.But we cannot deny the effect of those movies on our minds.Remember, mass media tends to influence people. It's their primary motives on why they produced such things. And we can't say it's not their concern on why violent incidents increases.Somehow, it is.
ReplyDeletewe really don't have to carelessly point out media violence as the prevailing ground for societal violence issues.Forms of violence seen on tv are mere expressions of human tendencies to display aggressive behaviors..Admit it or not.media violence reflects the real arena of aggressive behaviors and innate tendencies of the people.
ReplyDeleteMany may well strongly point out the ill effects of media violence but apparently.those are careless judgments, media violence open up our eyes on what our society really looks like.
Your reaction on such pictures of media violence would always point out to who you really are,to what kind of upbringing you are mold into and to what innate tendency you are
bound to have.
Media is a reflection of truth and violence is always a part of the truth because it really happens. So what matter most for me is the reality. Now, since violence really happens like killing, etc., then I accept that fact.

ReplyDeletemedia violence is not really the reason of the violence that is happening in our society because even without media violence do really occur due to misunderstanding and careless actions of the people. mass media doesn't provoke anybody to do harsh things, it's the people itself who misjudge media as a medium source of negative things.but in fact media gives us a wide view on how to deal with negative things that might suddenly occur in our lives. since the main purpose of media is to influence people it's on the people on how are they going to accept and understand the movie scene. mass media is showing us the reflection of ourselves and our society in which indeed is true.
ReplyDeleteMedia violence had been a problem of many communities for as long as I can remember. Some blames brutal movies for the violence that happens in the real life while others defend this kind of movies. As for me, aside from the fact that some scenes in this kind of movies are gross, I don't see anything wrong with this kind of films/show. Why? Because I know that I will never imitate what I see in these films. Besides how can producers made this kind of concept if he/she doesn't base his/her idea on a real life issue? It is because no matter how we deny this fact it is just an indication that this things is happening in the real life. And it also depends in the viewer if they will do the same on what they can see in movies anyway they already know what is wrong and what is right.
ReplyDeletemedia connects people. but it doesn't mean that we should solely take the blame on them. the media violence is only a visual-evidence of what is really happening in our world, thereof it is a message which is intended for us, of age audience, that we may digest the message in a more reasonable manner.
ReplyDelete...justifiable because media contribute big changes to our society and its catch the interest of young people.we already know that media has big influence to the young people, its very obvious because young people now a day became liberated but its natural because young people wants to explore.it is easy to the young people to adapt new behavior, attitude and lifestyle.thats why we need to be thank full to the media.
ReplyDelete..media reflects the reality.media give ideas.we learned more about our society and it give good effect to our social life.
ReplyDeleteViolence in mass media is in fact justifiable because it does triggers the interest of people who are in effect affected by such hype. This is much evident in teens for the reason that at such young age, influence is in a greater degree.
ReplyDeleteMedia will always be media, and it's all about honest services, giving it's viewers, readers and listeners the precise informations about what they have witnessed, and even give us the drama behind the scenes. That is how media works, it's all about reality, whether it exposes nudity, violence and injustice. There's no space for all those lies. We all deserve the truth, and media is our only resort, and through that, we will finally attain, the change we deserve.
ReplyDeleteMedia violence gives a great role in mass media. Every positive has its negative side. In a certain soap opera, the Protagonist can never be exist without her/his Antagonist. Just like in mass media we can never know the development of an issue without the existence of violence.I can say that media violence is justifiable.
ReplyDeletethere are many study shows that mass media does lead to violence despite of the fact that their are people and some researcher claim that violence in our society are causes by the media . for instance, of the millions of people who watch violent films through out the world only a small number who carried out acts of violence as a direct result. and another study shows that people who are regularly exposed to violent media usually grow up a normal personal. yes we cannot deny the fact that media has great impact in our society and has a large amount of control over the mind, perception, beliefs, and action of the people. but we cannot totally put the blame the the media, becuase their just portraying reality in our society and their doing their job. and besides there are sort of laws that media follows.
